How to Become a Hafiz – 8 Simple Steps

how to become a hafiz of Quran

Amongst the most common question of Muslims: How can I become a hafiz? Actually, that’s not the question we should be asking. The first step is to ask yourself. Why do I want to be a Hafiz? Now that’s the right question.

Think of a father who goes to work early in the morning after trekking through rough roads. What is it that gives this man strength, motivates him, and even if he sometimes wants to quit, he gathers his strength and keeps it going? His love and responsibility towards his family are the reason for this. If he didn’t have a purpose and a reason to endure hardship for the sake of it, perhaps he would have quit his job.

Anyone can become a hafiz, but some find it a very daunting task. For those who don’t know how to become a hafiz, we have come up with simple steps to follow in this post. Continue reading the post to learn the simple steps, rewards for a hafiz, and everything regarding this topic.

How to Become a Hafiz Online

A lot of Muslims want to learn Quran, but they don’t know how to become a hafiz. Following are a few instructions and tips that you can follow on how to memorize Quran much easier and faster and become a hafiz:

Renew Your Intention

This memorized book is not just any book. Therefore, we must realize that it is not an ordinary memorization process. We should also engrave in our hearts what we have memorized with our morals and actions.

Be Disciplined and Programmed

Remember that the guiding light to reach any goal is stability. Hence, Avoid memorizing Quran at random times throughout the day and find a suitable time to set aside for learning.

To attain the best results, it is recommended to start memorizing a new lesson after Fajr. It is believed to be the best part of the day to accommodate new things. Another great time to memorize Quran is before going to bed. Research has shown studying before sleeping helps in remembering what you have learned after waking up.

Know Tajweed well

Sometimes, small mistakes in pronunciation while reading the Quran can cause big changes in meaning. Especially if the person does not know Arabic and therefore memorizes words incorrectly. The best way to avoid these mistakes is to improve tajweed knowledge before starting to memorize.

Revise Regularly

Apart from memorizing a new chapter of the Quran at the start of your session, it is also important to revise what you have memorized in the past lessons. Those who don’t recite it regularly eventually forget what they have learned so far.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Read the Quran regularly. By the One in Whose Hand Muhammad’s soul is, it escapes from memory faster than a camel does from its tying ropes.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Keep reading and repeating the verses of the Quran that you have learned before so as to be stored in your mind permanently. If you skip revising the old lessons, you will eventually forget them, and there would be no point in going forward. Some revise the previous lessons on the daily basis, while others opt to do this once or twice a week.

Here is a detailed guide on how to revise Quran Hifz properly!

Learn the Arabic Language

By learning the Arabic language, you will know what you are reading, like how to act in accordance with Allah’s message, what will happen on the Day of Judgment, etc.

Many people find the understanding of certain Arabic words helpful in remembering what comes next while reading it off by heart. Though the Arabic language is not really easy to learn, our Best Online Arabic Course will make the learning process much easier.

Always Seek Allah’s Help

Lastly, keep making dua to the Almighty on a regular basis to seek His help with your memorization and grace you with patience and willpower to complete this beautiful act of worship. By seeking help from Allah SWT, you will get motivated, which will help you in remaining determined on memorizing the Quran.

If you find it hard to continue at any moment, don’t lose hope. It is a must for anybody who has memorized the Quran to remember what they have memorized, whether it is a single verse or the entire Quran.

Dua to Become Hafiz

A Muslim supplicating to Allah

It cannot be said that there is a specific dua to become hafiz, but with the advice of our Prophet and duas, help can be asked from Allah. Also, plenty of verses and supplications can be recited to increase knowledge.

It has been reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) often used to say: “O Allah, benefit me by that which you have taught me, and teach me that will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge. Praise is to Allah in all situations, and I seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the Fire.” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

Other duas to say to get Allah’s help in increasing knowledge are as follows:

  • “O, Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is of benefit, a good provision, and deeds that will be accepted.” [Ibn As-Sunni]
  • “O, Allah!  Make easy for me every difficult thing, with Your special favor and Kindness, for it is easy for You to make every difficult thing easy.”
  • “…My Lord, expand [i.e., relax] for me my breast [with assurance]. And ease for me my task. And remove the impediment from my tongue. So, people may understand my speech” (Taha: 25-28)

How Long Does It Take to Become Hafiz?

The answer to this question depends on the person who wants to be a Hafiz. A person’s will and stability are the determining factors in this regard. Saying that such and such an age is the most suitable age for this may create stereotypes in your thoughts and perhaps reduce your desire or motivation to become a hafiz.

For example, if you take a 10-year-old hafiz as a base, you may think that you are too late for this, even though you are not. Some are 50 years old, but they can finish this process as fast as possible for their age, while someone is a teenager and will complete it in 6 months.

Don’t put yourself in other people’s molds. If you have any shortcomings, complete them. The cornerstone of being Hafiz is repetition. Everything that is repeated is doomed to be memorized and somehow be remembered.

Can I Memorize Quran in 1 Year?

Many Muslims want to know how to become a hafiz in 1 year. Well, it’s a comfortable time to memorize the Quran. There are more opportunities for memorization-connection-revision processes than for shorter periods. In this way, repetition, which we consider the basis of Hifz, is made to the fullest. This is a sign of a permanent Hifz.

How to Become a Hafiz in 6 Months

Being a hafiz in 6 months means memorizing an average of 3 pages a day. Hifdh, which generally continues as memorizing and connecting, and finally, reciting the entire Quran by heart, can be memorized programmatically in 6 months. The more time you spend memorizing, the less you need to do revision later.

Become a Hafiz in 56 Days!

If you want to memorize it in such a short time, your knowledge of Tajweed must be at a very good level so that you do not waste time getting stuck with pronunciation difficulties. Also, your memorization ability must be very good.

The pages you memorize will be divided into certain times of the day. First of all, try to evaluate the morning time. If you can’t make it that day, you’ll have to memorize more the next day. That’s why we draw attention to being programmed.

A strict and disciplined program is essential in a short period of time. It is absolutely necessary to have a teacher to whom you give your memorizations. A camp is preferred in terms of discipline, but if this is not the case, you can proceed with a disciplined program with your teacher from home or online from wherever you want.

In short, people often ask, “Is it possible to memorize the Quran in 1 year?”. Yes, however, it depends on the memory, time, and effort one puts in. If you are thinking about how to memorize Quran in 1 year, then you need to separate yourself from unnecessary activities and memorize nearly 16 verses per day.

Some people also ask, “How to memorize Quran in 30 days or how to memorize Qur’an in a month?”, “Is it possible to memorise Qur’an in 56 days?”, “How to become a hafiz in 6 months?”, etc. The answer to these questions is similar. Depending on how good your memorization is, this could take between one to multiple months. You can divide the number of verses to be covered in a day and plan your schedule accordingly to memorize the text faster.

What Is the Reward for Becoming a Hafiz

Reciting Quran from a Mushaf

Memorizing the Quran is an act of worship through which a Muslim seeks Allah’s pleasure and reward in the Hereafter. The benefits of being a hafiz are immense, Allah has given special rewards and privileges to the one who learns the Holy Quran in numerous ways in this world and the afterlife.

Of course, we don’t do our worship to be rewarded, but sometimes we look for motivation to do what we do consistently and beautifully. In this context, we can find the greatest encouragement in the hadiths of our prophet:

“Whoever recites the Quran and memorizes it, making lawful what it makes lawful, and unlawful what it makes unlawful, Allah will admit him to Paradise due to it, and grant him intercession for ten of his family members who were to be consigned to the Fire.” (Jami’ At-Tirmidhi)

What greater reward can there be than that Allah guarantees Paradise for the person who memorizes the Quran?

How Hard Is It to Become a Hafiz?

Memorizing Quran is not difficult as it is maybe the only religious book that millions of people globally have memorized to perfection. The process gets easier with proper guidance and expert help on how to become a hafiz.

Punishment for Hafiz

Reading and learning the Quranic verses are among the virtuous acts in the sight of Allah SWT. Conversely, if a person fails to act in accordance with Allah’s commands, he, therefore, incurs the anger of the Almighty.

Narrated by Samura bin Jundab that Allah’s Apostle (PBUH) said in his narration of a dream that he saw, “He whose head was being crushed with a stone was one who learned the Quran but never acted on it, and slept ignoring the compulsory prayers.” [Sahih Al Bukhari]
